NIGERIAN MINISTER PROPOSES ANOTHER ONE YEAR OF SCHOOLING AFTER GRADUATION

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah,  has forwarded a proposal that students should have one extra year of learning in a specialized institution after their graduation.

This was discussed during the ongoing Retreat for Governing Councils of Nigerian Federal Universities, organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) with the theme, “Elements of Statutory Governance, Procurement and Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities"

The minister said that he has come up this idea because many graduates are not fit to work in the industry after their HND or BSC, some of the discussion that was had while the retreat was ongoing were:

Instances of a fresh graduated MBBS student who couldn't identify or interprete the result of a blood test.

And a graduate of electrical engineering who cannot identify a neutral wire.

He claimed that some of these things have been on for a while, and that the SIWES which was introduced in the late 90s to curb these problem of only "book book, theory theory and no practical" aren't really working effectively as they should or as expected. Some students doesn't even pay attention to their siwes while some are regularly absent till the program ends and report falsified details to their handler, lecturer, or supervisor.

Some of what he said were:

“Law students attend Law School for one year before going for NYSC and medical students go for one year Houseman ship before they are allowed to practice fully, so it will be necessary for other courses to also go through this process,” Mr Anwukah said.

“The Lagos Business School can also serve as a one year after-school training,” he added.

He further stated that the industrial training that was introduced into the University system to bridge this gap has failed in doing that.

Reacting to this, Professor of Developmental Education, University of Abuja, Prof Salisu Ingawa said that is not the solution and it may never work due to the fact that it will be cost intensive and may take a long time to be implemented.

Now over to you, how well do you like this idea, we'd like to know your reaction in the comment box.
